Romance Reader Code Words

If you have ever overheard a group of romance readers mid-conversation and felt like you needed a translator, you are absolutely not alone. Romance readers have quietly developed their own language over the years, and it is efficient, expressive, and honestly rather brilliant once you know how it works. Whether you are brand new to the romance genre or you have been lurking on BookTok wondering what on earth an FMC is, this glossary is for you.

A Beginner-Friendly Glossary

HEA — Happily Ever After The golden rule of romance fiction. No matter how much heartbreak the characters wade through, love wins in the end. It is a promise the genre makes to its readers, and one of the reasons so many of us keep coming back.

HFN — Happy For Now Their relationship is real and it is heading somewhere beautiful, even if the wedding and the babies haven't quite arrived yet.

TBR — To Be Read The ever-growing, never-shrinking pile of books you fully intend to get to, possibly in this lifetime. It lives on your bedside table, your Kindle, your Goodreads shelves, and several sticky notes around your house.

DNF — Did Not Finish We tried. We really did. Sometimes a book just isn't the right fit at the right time, and that is perfectly allowed.

ARC — Advanced Reader Copy A free early copy of a book sent to reviewers before release day, so that the world can know about it the moment it lands.

Autobuy An author you trust so completely that you pre-order without reading a single word of the blurb. The highest honour a reader can bestow.

Backlist All of an author's previously published titles—otherwise known as your next reading binge, already planned out for you.

Book Boyfriend The fictional hero you would absolutely choose over any real-life dating app, without hesitation and with zero apology.

Book Hangover The emotional fog that descends in the 48 hours after you finish a particularly wonderful story, during which nothing in real life feels quite as interesting as the fictional world you just had to leave.

Black Moment The devastating near-the-end scene where everything falls apart and you genuinely question your decision to become emotionally attached to fictional people. Tissues recommended.

Big Mis The misunderstanding that could be resolved in a single honest conversation but instead fuels roughly 300 pages of beautiful, agonising tension. We complain about it every time. We secretly love it.

Cliffy / CH — Cliffhanger An ending that leaves you staring at the last page with your mouth open, quietly furious, already searching for the next book.

Slow Burn When the romantic tension builds so gradually and so deliciously that by the time the characters finally come together, you feel like you have personally earned that moment alongside them.

Spicy Romance with open-door intimacy. You will know it when you see the 🌶️ emoji in the description.

Sweet / Clean Romance Little to no on-page intimacy, with the focus resting on emotional depth, connection, and those heart-stopping almost-moments.

Heat Level The scale that tells you how much passion is on the page, ranging all the way from sweet to very spicy indeed.

POV — Point of View Whose head we are inside as we read—some stories give us one perspective, while dual POV lets us experience the romance from both sides.

FMC / MMC — Female Main Character / Male Main Character The hero and heroine at the heart of the story. A strong FMC is worth her weight in gold.

GR — Goodreads Where romance readers track their reading, leave reviews, discover new titles, and maintain the gentle illusion that their TBR is under control.

KU — Kindle Unlimited The subscription service that keeps the reading addiction well and truly fed.

WIP — Work in Progress What your favourite author is quietly working on right now, which means your next HEA, your next Book Hangover, and your next TBR addition are already on their way.
